  • After quite some time I have completed 'Endless Evening at Lake Alexandrina'. Having visited the lake many times, this long calm evening pictured in the painting has been the most memorable. I arrived late on a balmy autumn afternoon having never visited before, and it was simply stunning, not a breath of wind with the last golden leaves grasping onto the tree branches. Time seemed eternal as the sun slowly sank behind the hills.
More visits over the years have also brought lovely evenings, although none as perfect as this one, also grey choppy days and howling gales. The area certainly gets its fair share of weather extremes.
In the background of this painting you can see right down to the Cass Valley and a peek of the Godley Valley with the Hall Range in the centre background.
This painting has a variety of elements in it, from the lake boulders and smooth transparent water to the wiggly, super detailed intricate reflections and of course the iconic boat sheds. Did I mention each of those individual leaves ready to blow off the trees?

Lake Alexandrina is a tranquil, spring-fed lake situated in the Mackenzie Basin on New Zealand's South Island, just to the west of the larger Lake Tekapo. Shallow and serene, it features a single outlet on its eastern shore, where the occasional fisherman can be spotted quietly rowing across its waters in search of a catch. The lake flows into the smaller Lake MacGregor before eventually feeding into Lake Tekapo. Amidst the brown desert landscape of the Mackenzie Plains, Lake Alexandrina stands as a refreshing oasis, renowned for its thriving populations of brown and rainbow trout, as well as salmon, making it a beloved spot for anglers.
